Summer Concert, Market & Fireworks planned for final weekend in June


The traditional Powell Festival will be held as a three-part concert series this year instead of a one-time annual weekend of festivities. The concert series will be held from 6-9 p.m. Friday, June 25, July 30 and Aug. 27 on the McClurg Properties Stage in Village Green Park, 47 Hall Street.

Powell Voters Approve Income Tax Restructuring


The City of Powell community turned out on May 4 to make their voices heard and voted to approve the income tax restructuring proposal, also approved unanimously by Powell City Council. Sixty-six percent of Powell voters approved implementation of the income tax restructuring, which goes into effect on January 1, 2022.

Celebrate Arbor Day


The city of Powell has partnered with the Delaware Soil & Water Conservation District to provide free saplings for you to plant this Arbor Day. These can be picked up via contactless pick up between 8 a.m. and sunset Arbor Day (Friday, April 30) at Seldom Seen Park, 3232 Seldom Seen Road. 

Additionally, the Powell Parks & Recreation Department has created a free Arbor Day Experience Pack to download here. This includes an outdoor project, learning opportunities, crafts, snack ideas and more. 

City benefits from historic low interest rates, strong credit rating in recent bond refinancing


The city of Powell has taken advantage of low interest rates and the city’s Standard & Poor’s ‘AAA’ bond rating to refinance portions of the city’s debt, reducing the debt service by more than $8.8 million over the life of the bonds.

This bond refinancing will reduce both the interest paid on the debt and reduce the term of the debt issues. The city sold the bonds using a competitive bid process receiving seven bids with the winning bid resulting in an all-in interest cost of 1.05 percent, drastically lower than the current debt that was outstanding at over 3 percent.

Income Tax Restructuring Proposal – Make your Voice Heard on May 4


Powell City Council unanimously approved a resolution that will place an income tax restructuring proposal before voters during the Primary Election on Tuesday, May 4, 2021. This measure will be the single issue on the ballot. Be sure to make your voice heard.  

Powell Police Department awarded with Advanced Accreditation with Excellence


The Powell Police Department has been an accredited police agency since 2002 through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA).  In 2020, the Police Department went through the assessment process and was awarded with the Advanced Accreditation for Law Enforcement with Excellence during CALEA’s virtual hearing on Friday, March 26. 

Finance Department awarded Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting


The Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting has been awarded to the City of Powell by Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for its comprehensive annual financial report. The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.
