Powell Police Perspective: Teen Dating Violence

The Powell Police Department is introducing the Powell Police Perspective, monthly articles focused on topics that are important for our community to understand. This month we’ll discuss Teen Dating Violence.

Many parents don’t think about their teenage child’s relationship as possibly being a violent one.

According to national statistics, 81 percent of parents believe teen dating violence is not an issue or admit they don’t know if it’s an issue. Nearly 1.5 million high school students nationwide experience physical abuse from a dating partner in a single year.

Being in a violent relationship as an adolescence has long lasting effects, including higher risks of becoming drug dependent, eating disorders, risky sexual behavior, further domestic violence relationships and the lack of fully understanding love.

It is important to understand some of the early warning signs that your child could be in a violent relationship. No one sign can determine if your child could be in a violent relationship but you should look more to the totality of the signs. Some of the signs include your child’s partner is extremely jealous or possessive; you notice bruises or marks on your child; you notice your child is depressed; your child loses interest in extracurricular activities; your child stops spending time with family; or your child begins to dress differently. Most teenagers will open up to someone about their relationship but many times that person will not be their parent. You should check your child’s social media and cell phone regularly.

If you determine your child may be in an unhealthy relationship, it is important you open up the line of communication with your child about it immediately. Be a good listener and don’t judge your child. Avoid giving your child an ultimatum and instead be supportive and encouraging.
