In wake of Zika Virus World Health Alert, DGHD monitoring for possible local occurrence

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(DELAWARE, Ohio) – The Delaware General Health District is educating residents and monitoring for any potential case of Zika virus – a mosquito-borne disease that is spreading rapidly across the American tropics.

The Health District’s communicable disease team along with the zoonotic disease program will monitor any potential human disease occurrence, especially if a traveler returns to this area from a Zika-affected region.

If a human illness is reported, the victim will be counseled and a containment effort including fogging (as weather dictates) will occur in the immediate area to try to prevent mosquitoes from biting the infected person.

The Health District may also provide preventative larviciding in areas that collect water to prevent mosquito maturation.  This is in addition to the yearly surveillance that occurs for West Nile Virus, La Cross Encephalitis and other mosquito-borne diseases which involve human, mosquito and avian monitoring.
