If you drive an electric vehicle, you will soon notice a fee change at one of Powell’s electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.
The new pricing structure for the Level 2 EV charging stations at City Hall, 47 Hall Street, has been set at $0.03 per minute for the first 180 minutes. Each additional minute after 180 minutes is $0.10 per minute.
“This rate adjustment will bring the charging station within the mid-range of charging rates across Central Ohio,” said City of Powell Assistant City Manager Jeffrey Tyler.
The median rate for EV charging is approximately $1.50 per hour, which equates to $0.025 per minute.
“By setting our rate at $0.03 per minute for the first three hours, we remain competitive while recouping some of the operating costs that the City has incurred for running the units,” said Tyler. “The increased rate of $0.10 per minute after 180 minutes will help manage occupancy and encourage turnover, keeping the station available for more users.”
The City of Powell offers two public electric vehicle (EV) charging station locations: one at City Hall and one in Murphy Park, 47 Murphy Parkway. The Murphy Park Level 3 fast chargers can charge a battery about 80% in 30 minutes, depending on the size. Since these chargers use more electricity, the rate structure will remain the same to ensure cost recovery.
The charging stations promote sustainability and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions while giving the increasing number of electric vehicle owners in Powell opportunities for charging.
