Council adopts master plan for the City’s ninth park

The master plan for the Park at Seldom Seen was unanimously approved by City Council during the Feb. 3 meeting.

The Park at Seldom Seen is a 23-acre park site along the north side of Seldom Seen Road west of the railroad tracks.

Proposed Amenities

  • Five soccer fields
  • Two ball diamonds
  • Two playgrounds
  • Nature preserve
  • Public service operations facility
  • 13,000 sq. ft. indoor athletic facility
  • Ample parking
  • Multiuse paths
  • Summer shelter with restrooms

Powell voters passed a 1.8-mill bond levy to fund a portion of the capital improvements needed in the City for the next 10 years during the Nov. 2012 election. The Park at Seldom Seen is one of the components in the City’s 10-year capital improvement projects plan. Other projects include the Murphy Parkway Extension, Sawmill Parkway traffic signals, bike paths and the Street Maintenance Program.

Powell will continue to explore funding mechanisms as the 1.8-mill bond levy does not generate enough funds required to construct the Park. The City will now proceed with the preliminary engineering for the park to determine a cost estimate to construct the park as well as a proposed phased construction schedule.

Proclamation declares Friday as Heart Disease Awareness Day

City Council has declared Friday, Feb. 6 as Heart Disease Awareness Day in the City.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both women and men in the United States. About 600,000 Americans die from heart disease each year – that’s one in every four deaths.

The Olentangy Liberty High School DECA Chapter has organized several events for Friday to educate the Powell community alongside the American Heart Association about heart disease and preventive measures to lower the risk involved.

Zoning map amendment tabled indefinitely

An ordinance to approve a zoning map amendment for 5.37 acres at 185 N. Liberty Street from residence district to downtown residence district has been tabled indefinitely by the applicant. On Mark Communities would like to bring the zoning map amendment before City Council once the Powell Comprehensive Plan has been finalized. The Plan is slated to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2015.

The proposed Reserve at Morris Place is a proposed mixed-residential subdivision and includes 39 condominium homes. The requested zoning change from residential to downtown residential is to accommodate development of condominium homes south of Adventure Park as described and recommended in the Downtown Revitalization Plan. This will also allow the extension of Depot Street from Case Street to Adventure Park Drive.
