Current Employment Opportunities

The City of Powell Police Department has three full-time Police Officer positions currently available. We are accepting uncertified and lateral officers. 

Testing has closed for the Powell Police Department Police Officer candidates. Interested candidates must first take the Public Safety Self-Assessment test through the National Testing Network (NTN) to be considered in the hiring process. Candidates must also meet the requirements to be a City of Powell Police Officer to be considered.

The Powell Police Department has a new FOP contract for 2024 through 2026 that offers the following enhanced compensation and benefits:

  • An 18% increase in compensation over the life of the contract
  • Increased vacation accrual and having prior years of service count toward earning additional vacation time
  • Retention Incentive pay starting at 4 years of service with the City
  • Two additional holidays - Juneteenth and Veteran's Day
  • Educational Incentives for having an Associate's Degree, Bachelor's Degree, and Master's Degree
  • Shift Differential pay at $1.15/hr.
  • Refillable bank of comp time up to 84 hours. Employee may cash time out or use for time off
  • Elect to save holiday pay into Holiday Pay Compensatory Bank up to 96 hours a year. Employee may cash time out or use for time off
  • Field Training Officer and Instructor supplement of $3.00/hr.
  • Agency paid life insurance policy up to $100,000
  • Flexibility to work out during your shift
  • Possibility of alternative work schedules

Application Process

All applicants must successfully complete a written test through the National Testing Network. To schedule a test, go to www.nationaltestingnetwork.com, select Law Enforcement and sign-up for the Powell Police Department. All applicants who take the test will be notified of their individual results.

All applicants are required to complete the Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ) as part of the NTN process. You can access this questionnaire through your candidate account. The City of Powell does not require a PAT (Physical Abilities Test) through NTN.

The deadline to take the test was Saturday, June 8, 2024 by 5 pm EST. The City’s recruitment process will take approximately three months with interviews and background checks, but could take longer due to circumstances out of the City’s control.

Applicants obtaining the minimum required score of 70% on the video-based human relations section of the test through NTN will be scheduled for a panel interview. Interviews are scheduled for June 18 and June 28, 2024.

Applicants who receive a test score of 70% or higher on the video-based human relations section of the NTN test, passed the panel interview, meet the requirements to be a City of Powell Police Officer; and do not have a history with any of the automatic disqualifiers, will be considered for a final interview with the Chief of Police.

Paid Time-Off

 The City offers paid leave for employees to have a work-life balance.

Vacation Leave

Prior service with the Ohio Police & Fire Pension Fund, State of Ohio, or any political subdivision in the state, will receive credit for that service in computing their continuous length of service for vacation accrual.

Employees assigned to work a holiday are paid at a rate of one-half (1 ½ times) their regular rate.

Employees may elect to place their holiday pay in a holiday pay compensatory time bank.

Personal Hours

Employees receive sixteen (16) personal hours each year that must be used by December 31st.

Health Insurance

The City offers medical through UMR/United Healthcare Choice Plus, dental through Delta Dental, vision through VSP Vision Care, and prescription coverage for all full-time employees and their eligible dependents day one (1) of employment.

The City has a high-deductible health care plan with a Health Savings Account (HSA).

  • $3,200 deductible for employee only coverage and $5,000 deductible for family coverage.
  • The City contributes up to 85% of the deductible to the employee's HSA account.
  • $2,720 for employee only coverage and $4,250 for family coverage

Life Insurance

All employees receive a life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment policy free at one (1) times their annual earnings up to $100,000.

Additional Benefits

  • Shift Differential Pay - $1.15/hr.

Requirements to be a City of Powell Police Officer

At the time of appointment:

  • United States citizen, or possess a valid permanent resident card
  • Fluently read and speak English
  • Must currently possess a valid Ohio Peace Officer certificate from the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy or be able to pass the exam
  • Must be 21 or older at the time of appointment
  • ORC 124.41 , Police Department Qualifications - Police Cadet Program: Must be able to complete processing and enter an Academy class before reaching the 35th birthday
  • Valid Ohio driver's license
  • High school diploma or equivalent certificate
  • No felony convictions
  • Must be able to successfully complete all stages of the selection process to include application phase, oral interviews, background investigation, truth verification examination, medical examination and psychological examination.

Automatic Disqualifiers

The following will disqualify a potential candidate from hire for the position of Police Officer:

  • Any incidents of dishonesty or falsification throughout the application and selection process
  • History of domestic violence or failure to pay court-ordered child support
  • Employment history that includes a pattern of discipline or termination
  • Any 'dishonorable', 'bad conduct' or 'other than honorable discharge' from military service
  • A conviction of vehicular homicide or an equivalent offense
  • Driving record which contains multiple moving violations, recent OVI or equivalent offenses, other serious traffic convictions or an overall poor driving record
  • Criminal history, that includes:
    • Any felony conviction
    • An admission or a conviction for any theft offense within the last (5) years
    • A pattern of theft or similar offenses
    • Any fraudulent insurance or related claims
    • Multiple criminal convictions of any nature
  • Substance abuse, that includes:
    • Any illegal substance use within one (1) year of the candidate's application
    • History of cultivating, manufacturing or trafficking in illegal drugs
    • A pattern of using illegal drugs or abusing legally obtained drugs
