(POWELL, Ohio)—May 21, 2021—The city of Powell is hosting the annual Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday, May 31 in downtown Powell. The parade and ceremony will follow public health guidelines established by local, state and federal health agencies.
This year’s parade will feature approximately 30 units and will begin on Grace Drive and follow west to North Liberty Street. Participants will then travel south on Liberty Street to Olentangy Street, where they will turn right and continue west. The parade ends at the railroad crossing on Olentangy Street. The parade will be streamed live to the city’s Facebook Page.
A ceremony will be held immediately following the parade at the Amphitheater Stage in Village Green Park, located at 47 Hall Street. The program will include remarks from Mayor Frank Bertone and keynote speaker retired United States Marine Corps Reserve Lieutenant Colonel Tom Foos.
About the Keynote Speaker
Tom’s military experience began as an infantry rifle platoon commander serving on active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps. During that time, he participated in combat operations in Operations Desert Shield and Storm. He subsequently served as a scout platoon commander and company executive officer before leaving active duty. He subsequently joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and served as a rifle company commander for three years. Mr. Foos held the position as a battalion logistics officer before his promotion to Lieutenant Colonel and served as a regional operations planner in the current operations branch for Marine Forces Atlantic in Norfolk, VA.
During his last deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, he served as the Commander of the U.S. Marine Security Forces that protected Camp Lemonier, located in Horn of Africa (Djibouti) and is the only U.S. military installation on the continent of Africa. In addition to that responsibility, he oversaw force protection for the U.S. Embassy in Djibouti and U.S. ships utilizing the Port of Djibouti.
Mr. Foos currently serves as the President and co-founder of Powell-based ARMADA, Ltd.
Field of Flags
In addition to the Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony, the Olentangy Rotary Club is hosting the annual Field of Flags display in Village Green Park throughout Memorial Day weekend. Nearly 100 flags will be placed in Village Green Park to honor fallen heroes.
Public Health Guidelines
The Ohio Department of Health this week amended its remaining health order to match the new CDC guidance, which allows those who have been vaccinated to stop wearing masks. Under the ODH/CDC’s new guidance, those who have not been vaccinated should continue to wear a mask and socially distance. Please be mindful of safe distancing along the parade route.
