Murphy Parkway Extension scheduled to open Sept. 30th

(POWELL, Ohio)—Sept. 23, 2016—The City of Powell plans to open the new Murphy Parkway Extension next Friday, Sept. 30 in time for the evening commute. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. next Friday prior to the opening.

The project extends the existing Murphy Parkway to Liberty Street and serves as another downtown Powell bypass, improving traffic flow along Olentangy and Liberty Street.

“While six out of ten people believe Powell is an exceptional place to live, only one resident in three is satisfied with local traffic,” said City Manager Steve Lutz. “Traffic has dramatically increased over the years and we know our community is frustrated. The Murphy Parkway Extension is a great step towards improving congestion along our main arteries in Powell.”

Powell voters passed a $7 million renewal bond levy to fund a portion of the capital improvements needed in the City during the Nov. 2012 election. The bond levy took effect on Jan. 1, 2014 after an existing park levy expired. The Murphy Parkway Extension project totaled approximately $2.1 million and was a key item in the capital improvement project program.

Other projects that have been funded from the bond levy include two new traffic signals at Sawmill Parkway and Galloway Drive and Sawmill Parkway and Village Club Drive.

Additionally, the City is adding new stretches of bike path along the north side of Rutherford Road from Sawmill Parkway west to Tricia Price Drive and along the west side of North Liberty Street next spring. Levy dollars also will fund the first couple phases of the Park at Seldom Seen. Construction is expected to begin next spring at the new park.

“We are taking a number of steps to improve traffic circulation, add parking in our downtown and increase walkability and bicycling through our new Keep Powell Moving initiative,” said Lutz. “We are continuing to work with our residents and businesses to finalize a plan and prioritize projects that will further address traffic concerns, as funding allows.”
